EACH YEAR we gather in the Autumn woods

EACH YEAR we gather in the Autumn woods, awash with colors and the scents of fallen leaves, to explore the craft of writing. Of self-expression. We call it ‘WRITERS IN THE WOODS.’ Some have been returning for years, and some are new arrivals. It doesn’t matter–we quickly become a family, supporting each other, sharing and learning together. The art of writing takes many forms, from poetry and haiku to short stories to essays to humor to personal journaling to writing for publication. With the forest as a backdrop and inspiration, we explore the various forms together.
We learn the ‘Three Secrets of Being a Writer.’ We seek out metaphors, always abundant in the outdoors. We practice looking and listening. We look for the right phrase, the right word, a way of capturing a feeling, a moment. We explore our own individual ‘writer’s path,’ different from anyone else’s. We learn the KISS principle. (‘Keep it simple, stupid!’) getting rid of stuff we don’t need. We get empowered. We get creative. We get into editing and how it is so very different from writing. We get past the awkward, “I’m too shy–am I really a writer?” feeling that is so very common among anyone who picks up a pen. Or a laptop. And most importantly–MOST importantly–we have fun.
With my own background of 40 published books (yes, several NY Times best-sellers, about 3 million copies sold) and countless songs, magazine articles, etc, I seem to be able to help. To give some good how-to tips and advice, but mostly I create a safe, warm and welcoming environment. At least, that’s what they tell me.
If any of this sounds like fun to you, no matter what your level of experience or lack thereof, you’re invited! This is my least expensive retreat/workshop of the year, but one of the most enjoyable. On the shores of beautiful Grindstone Lake near Sandstone, MN, at Osprey Wilds Environmental Learning Center. Mandolins, guitars, campfires, marshmallows, all the good stuff. Historic lodge with huge screen porch and gathering areas, spacious bunk-rooms but with max of only two sleepers in each.
DATES: OCT. 9–11. Cost $1,100.
