Easter-ish Outing To Birding Hot Spot Crex Meadows

Easter-ish Outing - prairie fire

TODAY’S EASTER-ISH OUTING TO BIRDING HOT SPOT CREX MEADOWS became an unexpected visit to a prairie fire.

A controlled burn, actually, necessary every few years to help the reconstituted prairies and wetlands remain just that. It was quite a sight, and a powerful glimpse into the past, when such fires ruled the center of the continent. When the burr oak was the arboreal scout and holdout, and when prairies and wetlands were vastly more plentiful than today.
