FIFTY-THREE YEARS AGO TODAY

FIFTY-THREE YEARS AGO TODAY, the girl I had loved for all four years of college (but she only knew it for one) said ‘I do.’ And made me the happiest, luckiest guy in the whole world. It seems good things are worth waiting for. And patience is a virtue. And stuff like that. Have all the days of the 53 years been perfect? Yes. Of course.
Today, under a bright sun and a brilliant blue sky, I putter on our island—cleaning up downed trees, stacking logs, raking the work area, putting new ropes on the boat. It is the sort of place we hardly dared dream of long ago. Now we have been here for more than three decades.
This evening, after all the chores and puttering, we will boat across the lake for a special dinner at the Thunderbird. And we will quietly celebrate. There is a lot to celebrate.
