MANY FOLKS HAVE DIFFICULTY

MANY FOLKS HAVE DIFFICULTY understanding the impenetrable mystery of Zen. Millions of words have been written about it. But here is the entire secret of Zen, and of everyday happiness:
When you are in the kitchen doing the dishes, be in the kitchen. And do the dishes. When you are walking beside a stream, walk beside the stream. When you listen to someone—a child or a bird or a friend—listen. With both ears. And when you stop to smell a flower, stop. Smile. And breathe in the fragrance as deeply as you as you can.
When you can do these things, you will have achieved a great wonder. You will have arrived at the most important destination in the world—the ground beneath your feet. And you will be living your life, not watching it flow away like a stream from which you never drank.
