WITH THE TRANSITION to winter weather in the MIDDLE OF OCTOBER(!!!) most of my little bonsai friends have transitioned into the cold, unattached garage to go into winter dormancy.

Their sleep is not complete, hence the grow light, but it is important for them to have a winter rest and conserve energy for the spring and summer growing season next year. They are kept between 34–42 degrees. I had thought their fall transition outdoors would last a few weeks longer. Who knew!? For now, they are keeping the motorcycle and lawnmower and a Three Stooges poster and Easy Rider poster company. And canoe paddles and books and other stuff. It is fun to go into the garage and see my green and living friends…
