AT FAWN ISLAND on Rainy Lake

AT FAWN ISLAND on Rainy Lake, it has been a bit of a rainy, drizzly, cold and windy day. But things are clearing up a bit this evening. (And the rain is GOOD for moistening the woods and suppressing North Woods forest fires). Meanwhile the 7 year old granddaughter has been practicing casting off the dock. And petting Koda the Forest Kitten. And watching and listening to the bald eagle mama and papa and baby in the tree-top just 150 yards away. And the mallard couple that splashed in for a visit. And the loons that occasionally launch an echoing song off the rocky shores. And Grandad was able to point out the sweet little voice and golden presence of the little yellow warbler, the very same species we were enjoying some 300 miles to the south just a week ago.
Soon the spring peepers and chorus frogs will be starting up. And there may be a game of Yahtzee to be played. It’s a good thing to be a grandad with a granddaughter and a cat and a yellow warbler and a bald eagle family and other friends and family on a small rocky island in a North Woods lake. A good and fine and lucky thing. And happily for me, the granddaughter thinks so, too.
No, the world is not perfect. Ever. But there is still much goodness to be found, and shared, and appreciated and loved.
