Koda the Forest Kitten has a secret friend
OUR PET/WILD THING Koda the Forest Kitten has a secret friend. His/her name is Bunny Rabbit. Bunny Rabbit lives under the deck. B-rab is not really secret, because we know about him. We sometimes see him hopping around the cabin at night, and this time of year find the familiar tracks in the snow. But what transpires between Koda and B-rab—such things we are not privy to. Koda heads for the door first thing in the morning and rings his bell, the agreed-upon signal that he wants out. This end is quickly accomplished and 30 seconds later Koda wants back in.
At this point breakfast is served and Koda again rings the bell and goes back out. For one to two hours. Most of which is spent under the deck. With B-rab. What goes on under there, we just don’t know. We imagine tea and crumpets—English Breakfast tea, of course. And whatever ‘crumpets’ are. And visiting and gossiping about the affairs of the day. And discussing the weather, surely. But it’s mostly a mystery.
After that Koda comes back in, just to check on us. And maybe a little brunch. And a nickel-size splash of half&half. Then it’s back out to monitor/chase away the deer, from the feeding table. Squirrels, too. Then back in for a long mid-day nap. This routine varies little from day to day. Cats like a routine. But we are glad that Bunny Rabbit is a part of it and that Koda has a friend. Of course he has Simon, but Simon is older and a touch grumpy and self-involved. I’m a friend too, as is Kathy. But we’re all really family, and you know how that is. And besides, we don’t live under the deck. Or drink English Breakfast tea.
So there is Bunny Rabbit. B-rab. With whom to visit and socialize and hob-nob, and help to pass the long winter months. It’s a fine and happy thing.
