ON A COLD NOVEMBER DAY

ON A COLD NOVEMBER DAY at the Church O The Pines, as ice skins over the shallow places and errant snowflakes dance across the deck, the time has arrived. Time to bring the little bonsai trees into their winter home, the small greenhouse in the old carriage-house garage. They look happy there and I will enjoy them through the long, cold months—a touch of life, of fresh greenery, and a reminder that warm breezes and longer days will eventually come again.
The garage is not really a garage, as it is not big enough for a modern automobile, and hasn’t been for a long time. But it is big enough for photo galleries and mementos, and a little bonsai forest—safe from the freezing, drying winds of winter. And for my motorcycle, upon which Koda-the-Forest-Kitten lands for a quick visit, and to see if any rogue mouse has perhaps invaded our Man Cave space. It’s a good space, and Kathy seems happy to have me out there. Koda and I enjoy it. I think the bonsais do as well.
