SCENES from an afternoon island nap

SCENES from an afternoon island nap. Even though I was mostly in charge of Paddy for the first 4-6 weeks, he soon bonded with Kathy much more strongly. I didn’t mind—just glad to see him safe and happy. But this last week on the island Paddy and I have had a breakthrough. So very nice.
We have discovered/decided that the little fellow is significantly vision-impaired. Perhaps nearly blind. Which makes his survival out in the wild even more remarkable, and probably explains his early terror at anyone nearby, when he can’t see who they are or what their intentions may be. We surmise that he was probably very badly treated by a man sometime in the past. (How brave he was to ask for help and let me care for him!)
He identifies Kathy and me mostly by our voices, (is still afraid of other people) and can only focus visually on things at very close range. But he has a lovely time playing with toys and strings and balls, and dearly loves to cuddle. Now I’m gladly getting more of the cuddles.
All of this just makes us love him more, and feel even happier for his evident comfort and safety with us. A sweet little soul.
