The story of Paddy

MANY OF YOU campfire friends have followed the story of Paddy, the frightened, injured, and bedraggled little waif who came to our cabin door a year ago. The day after St. Patrick’s Day, to be exact. Thought you might like a ‘birthday’ update. The first picture below was taken today. The other two a week after Paddy came to us, last March. Still terrified, still could not be touched. Still living in the garage when we could coax him in out of the cold.
Now Paddy would sit in Kathy’s lap and snuggle under her chin ALL DAY if she would let him. He loves her to the moon and back, and he’s pretty fond of me, too. But no other humans. In the last two weeks he has just begun to learn how to purr. He is small, about 8lbs, and is an FIV kitty, so his outdoor roaming days are done. But he never asks to go out, is perfectly content to be an indoor pet. In fact, he seems content and happy with his life in every way, as long as we’re around. But he does not like to be alone.
Folks have asked about Paddy and Koda, who came to us in much the same way and in the same month 4 years ago. Are they friends yet? we are asked. No, but we are patient and determined and are getting close. Because of the FIV we have to be careful. Today, after a year, we held them just 6 inches apart, and Koda never stopped purring; while Paddy made a few worried squeaks but cuddled in Kathy’s arms. We think it will happen soon. How about we let you know when it does?
Meanwhile we are so proud of this little guy. He was SO BRAVE to overcome his obvious fear and trauma; to come out of the woods to our door; to ask for help; to learn to be touched and held and loved. It was not a part of our plan—but we could not have asked for a more beautiful, loving, affectionate little friend. Happy ‘Birthday’ Paddy. You are loved.
