Valentines Day walk
THIS MORNING Kathy and I took a little Valentines Day walk. We decided to walk across the old Sartell bridge across the Mississippi—the only traffic bridge in existence when we first came here. In 1984 a new bridge was built, with the old one eventually transformed into a footbridge. But we had never hiked across it. So on this beautiful morning we did. Just upstream is the dam, and with one of the gates already open the water was flowing and swirling. Several chickadees came out from shore to flit among the steel beams and talk to us, curious no doubt about what these humans were doing high above the river on a chilly morning.
We reached the far shore where a sign confronted us, informing that actually crossing the bridge to continue onto the other side was not allowed. Above that sign was another one—a beautiful, informative sign, explaining some of the history of the bridge and dam. And here, high above the swirling waters, Kathy and I began to laugh. For within the very fine sign was a rather glaring error. Or typo (can you have a typo on a permanent metal sign? Perhaps it would be called a ‘sign-o’?) Actually, there are two errors. Can you spot them? What should we do about it? Tell someone? Find some paint and risk arrest for vandalism for fixing them? Or just enjoy the humor?
